The Big Five & Beyond Safari in Samburu National Reserve

One of the first highlights of The Big Five & Beyond safari is Samburu National Reserve, located in northern Kenya along the Ewaso Nyiro River. Samburu is known for unique wildlife species often called the Samburu Special Five, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and the long-necked gerenuk antelope.

Game drives also provide excellent opportunities to see lions, elephants, and leopards. The reserve’s rugged terrain and riverine forests make it one of Kenya’s most scenic wildlife destinations.

Rift Valley Lake Adventures

The safari continues through Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, where visitors experience spectacular lakes known for birdlife and geothermal activity. Lake Bogoria is famous for thousands of flamingos that gather along the alkaline shoreline, creating a stunning pink spectacle.

Nearby Lake Baringo offers scenic boat rides where travelers may encounter hippos, crocodiles, and many bird species including fish eagles and kingfishers. These lakes add an exciting birdwatching and ecological element to The Big Five & Beyond safari experience.

Rhino Conservation at Lake Nakuru

The journey continues to Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s best wildlife conservation areas. The park is known for protecting both black and white rhinos and is also home to Rothschild’s giraffes, lions, buffaloes, and numerous bird species.

Visitors may also see flamingos along the lake’s shores, creating another spectacular wildlife scene within Kenya’s Rift Valley landscapes.

Maasai Mara

The final highlight of The Big Five & Beyond safari is exploring the legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. Game drives across the vast plains offer excellent chances to see the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.

During migration season, visitors may witness the dramatic Great Wildebeest Migration, when millions of wildebeest and zebras cross the plains and rivers in search of fresh grazing.

Authentic Kenya Camping Safari Experience

Accommodation during The Big Five & Beyond safari is in carefully selected campsites that provide a comfortable yet authentic safari atmosphere. Guests enjoy freshly prepared meals at camp, picnic lunches during travel days, and relaxing evenings beneath the African stars.

This 11-Day Kenya Camping Safari combines wildlife exploration, birdlife spectacles, and cultural discovery, creating an unforgettable East African safari experience.

Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Kenya
Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Kenya

Your safari begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Nairobi or directly from the airport, followed by a short briefing outlining the journey ahead. From the capital, you travel north toward the Mount Kenya region, passing fertile farmlands and small rural towns along the way.

En route, you will drive through Thika, home to the well-known Del Monte pineapple plantations—vast stretches of cultivated fields that form one of the largest fruit-growing operations in East Africa.

Arrival is scheduled in time for lunch at the prestigious Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. Nestled within a private conservancy at the foothills of Mount Kenya, the property combines alpine freshness with forest serenity. Surrounded by manicured gardens and views of Africa’s second-highest peak, the setting offers a unique blend of wilderness and refined comfort.

In the afternoon, you may visit the Mount Kenya Animal Orphanage, located within the nearby conservancy and easily accessible from the lodge. The sanctuary provides care for injured, rescued, or displaced wildlife, with the primary objective of rehabilitation and eventual reintroduction into their natural habitat. The visit offers insight into local conservation efforts and close encounters with various species under professional care.

The day concludes back at the lodge, where you can relax and take in the cool mountain atmosphere.

Day 2: Mount Kenya – Samburu National Reserve
Day 2: Mount Kenya – Samburu National Reserve

After breakfast, you will set out northbound toward Samburu National Reserve, located in Kenya’s rugged northern region. The drive offers striking contrasts in scenery, gradually shifting from the cooler highlands to expansive semi-arid landscapes dotted with acacia trees and dramatic hills. Along the route, you will cross the Equator before continuing deeper into Samburu County.

Upon entering the reserve, your safari experience begins immediately with a game drive en route to camp. Wildlife sightings may include species unique to this ecosystem, adapted to the drier climate of northern Kenya.

Arrival will be at Elephant Bedroom Camp in time for check-in and lunch. Set along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the camp offers an intimate wilderness atmosphere with wildlife often seen nearby.

Later in the afternoon, you will head out for another game drive, exploring the reserve until early evening when animals are typically most active. The day concludes back at camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Samburu National Reserve
Day 3: Samburu National Reserve

Begin the day with breakfast at camp before heading out for an extended game-viewing experience in Samburu National Reserve. With a full day dedicated to exploration, you will have ample opportunity to observe the region’s distinctive wildlife and varied landscapes.

Samburu is particularly renowned for the “Special Five” — species rarely found elsewhere in Kenya. These include the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the long-necked gerenuk, known for standing upright to browse. In addition to these northern endemics, the reserve also supports large populations of elephants, as well as predators such as lions and leopards.

Game drives are typically conducted along the Ewaso Nyiro River, a vital water source that attracts a high concentration of wildlife, especially during the drier months. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed in the bush, allowing you to remain immersed in the natural surroundings.

Later in the afternoon, you will return to camp for relaxation, with time to unwind and reflect on the day’s sightings before dinner.

Day 4: Samburu National Reserve to Ol Pejeta Conservancy
Day 4: Samburu National Reserve to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After breakfast, you will check out and travel south toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy, located between the rolling foothills of the Aberdare Range and the snow-capped summit of Mount Kenya. The drive offers impressive scenery as you transition from the arid north to the greener Laikipia plateau.

You are scheduled to arrive in time for lunch at Serena Sweetwaters Camp. After some time to relax and settle in, the afternoon is devoted to a game drive across the conservancy’s diverse habitats, known for both Big Five sightings and strong conservation initiatives.

Following dinner at camp, a guided night game drive takes place from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm. This after-dark excursion provides a completely different wildlife experience. Using spotlights, your guide will search for nocturnal species that are rarely seen during the day, such as aardvarks, white-tailed mongooses, zorillas, and possibly bat-eared foxes. Predators including lions tend to be more active at night, and there is also the chance of encountering the elusive leopard on the move.

Evenings in Laikipia can be cool, so warm clothing is recommended for the night drive.

Day 5: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park
Day 5: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

Begin the day with an early morning game drive, followed by breakfast at camp. Thereafter, depart for Lake Nakuru National Park, traveling through the scenic Great Rift Valley. En route, you will pause at Thompson Falls to take in the dramatic views and photograph the cascading waters set against lush surroundings.

Arrival at the park is scheduled in time for lunch and check-in at The Cliff, a luxury camp perched above the lake with panoramic vistas. After settling in, you will head out for an afternoon game drive within the park.

Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned for its picturesque landscapes—rolling hills, acacia woodland, and open grasslands surrounding the alkaline lake. The park is one of Kenya’s key rhino sanctuaries, supporting a significant population of endangered black rhinos, as well as white rhinos frequently seen grazing near the lakeshore. Rothschild’s giraffes are also commonly spotted here.

Beyond its rhino conservation success, the park hosts a wide range of wildlife including zebras, hippos, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys, waterbucks, and hyenas. Predators such as lions—occasionally observed resting in trees—along with leopards, cheetahs, and buffalo, form part of the diverse ecosystem. In the wooded areas, African rock pythons may sometimes be seen coiled in branches, an impressive reminder of the park’s rich biodiversity.

Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight stay overlooking the lake.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara
Day 6: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara

Day 6: Lake Nakuru – Maasai Mara

After breakfast, you will check out and depart for the iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve. The journey takes you across the floor of the Great Rift Valley, with a scheduled stop at a panoramic viewpoint to admire the dramatic escarpments and capture photographs of this vast geological formation.

Continuing onward, there will be a brief pause in Narok Town, where you can experience a glimpse of local life, browse handcrafted souvenirs, and purchase fresh produce from the roadside markets.

Arrival at the reserve is planned in time for check-in and lunch at Entim Mara Camp, ideally located along the Mara River in the heart of the action.

In the afternoon, you will head out for your first game drive across the sweeping plains that have made the Maasai Mara world-renowned. The reserve supports an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, including zebras, wildebeests, gazelles, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs. The open savannah landscape provides excellent visibility, increasing your chances of remarkable sightings.

Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight stay immersed in the sounds of the African wilderness.

Day 7: Masai Mara National Reserve
Day 7: Masai Mara National Reserve

Have breakfast at 6:30 am and at 7 am, leave for a full day game viewing in the park. On this day, spend the full day exploring Maasai Mara in search of the big five, hippos and Nile crocodile. Thereafter, go for picnic lunch in park under a croton tree shade overlooking the vast landscape of the park. It is in the Mara that perhaps the most spectacular event of the natural world takes place: the great migration. This is the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti (in Tanzania) in search of water and pasture. Following on their heels are the predators of the savanna – lions, cheetahs, jackals, hyenas and vultures.

Day 8: Masai Mara National Reserve to Nairobi
Day 8: Masai Mara National Reserve to Nairobi

After a relaxed breakfast at your lodge or camp, your driver-guide will assist with check-out before beginning the return journey to Nairobi, the country’s dynamic capital.

En route, you will stop at a traditional Maasai village for a cultural visit. This experience offers insight into Maasai customs, daily life, traditional homesteads, and ceremonial practices. It also provides an opportunity to purchase handcrafted beadwork and other locally made souvenirs directly from community members.

Arrival in Nairobi is expected around lunchtime. Depending on your onward plans, you will either be transferred to your hotel in the city or dropped off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departing flight.
