Queen Elizabeth National Park – Uganda’s Wildlife Gem

Located in western Uganda and shared by the districts of Kasese, Bundibugyo, and Bushenyi, Queen Elizabeth National Park spans an impressive 1,978 km². The park lies 5–6 hours from Kampala on a surfaced road via Mbarara, or alternatively via Fort Portal through Kasese. Visitors can also access the park through the Ishasha sector, situated south of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Its diverse landscapes and habitats make it one of Uganda’s most iconic safari destinations.

Queen Elizabeth National Park encompasses parts of Lakes Edward and George, connected by the scenic Kazinga Channel, one of Africa’s richest wildlife waterways. The park’s varied ecosystems include bushy grasslands, acacia woodlands, swamp and lakeshore vegetation, and forest grasslands, providing a haven for a remarkable variety of flora and fauna. Geographers note approximately 57 vegetation types, though in practice, they can be grouped into five main levels that support a wide array of wildlife.

The park is home to over 95 mammal species, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, hippos, Uganda kob, waterbucks, and the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. Bird enthusiasts can enjoy over 612 recorded species, from pelicans and fish eagles to herons and kingfishers. Extensive game drives across savannahs, forested areas, and crater rims provide excellent opportunities to witness wildlife in its natural habitat.

A highlight of the park is a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, where hippos, crocodiles, and an incredible variety of water birds can be observed up close. For nature lovers and photographers, the park offers breathtaking views of crater lakes, lush wetlands, and panoramic savannah plains. Visitors can also engage with nearby local communities, learning about traditional Ugandan life and culture.

In addition to wildlife viewing, Queen Elizabeth National Park provides options for guided nature walks, birdwatching expeditions, and eco-tourism activities. The park’s combination of extraordinary biodiversity, scenic beauty, and cultural experiences makes it a perfect destination for family safaris, wildlife photographers, and adventure seekers.

Queen Elizabeth National Park offers an unforgettable safari experience where you can explore the best of Uganda’s wildlife, from elephants and lions to hippos and countless bird species, all set within stunning and diverse landscapes.
