Lake Victoria is one of the African Great Lakes and the largest lake in Africa by surface area. It is also the world’s largest tropical lake and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area after Lake Superior in North America. The lake was named after Queen Victoria by the explorer John Hanning Speke, the first Briton to document it in 1858 while on an expedition with Richard Francis Burton to locate the source of the Nile River. Today, Lake Victoria remains one of Africa’s most important natural landmarks, supporting millions of people and diverse ecosystems across East Africa.

With a surface area of approximately 68,800 square kilometres (26,600 sq mi), Lake Victoria is an immense body of water that plays a crucial role in the region’s geography and climate. In terms of volume, the lake is the world’s ninth-largest continental lake, containing about 2,750 cubic kilometres of water. The vast waters of Lake Victoria influence rainfall patterns, fisheries, transportation, and livelihoods across the surrounding regions.

Lake Victoria receives most of its water from direct rainfall as well as thousands of small streams that flow into the lake. The Kagera River is the largest river feeding the lake, entering from the western side. The lake is drained solely by the Nile River near Jinja in Uganda, making it one of the most significant sources of the White Nile and an essential component of the Nile River system.

Geographically, Lake Victoria occupies a shallow depression within the African continent. It has a maximum depth of about 84 metres (276 ft) and an average depth of around 40 metres (130 ft). The lake’s catchment area covers approximately 184,000 square kilometres, while its shoreline stretches for about 7,142 kilometres, including numerous islands that form part of its landscape.

Lake Victoria is shared by three countries: Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Tanzania controls the largest portion of the lake, followed by Uganda and Kenya. The lake supports fishing communities, transportation routes, tourism, and unique biodiversity, making it one of the most important freshwater ecosystems in Africa.
