Mt Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route

Experience the ultimate high-altitude adventure with the Mt Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route, widely regarded as one of the most scenic paths to Africa’s highest peak. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers a gradual ascent, incredible landscapes, and the chance to avoid large crowds, making it a favorite for climbers seeking both challenge and beauty.

The trek typically spans six to seven days, allowing climbers to acclimatize effectively while progressing through varied ecosystems. Starting from the Machame Gate, hikers traverse dense montane forests where colobus monkeys and exotic birds abound. As the forest gives way to heath and moorland, trekkers reach the iconic Shira Plateau, with expansive views of Kibo, Mawenzi, and the Western Breach. The route’s dramatic landscapes, including lava towers and alpine deserts, make every day of the climb a visually stunning experience.

Accommodation is provided in well-managed camps, where professional cooks prepare hearty meals and porters carry heavy gear. This support allows climbers to focus fully on their ascent and enjoy the scenery without extra burdens. The Machame Route is also less crowded than the Marangu Route, giving trekkers a more peaceful and immersive experience in the wilderness.

Summit day begins in the pre-dawn hours, offering climbers a breathtaking sunrise as they approach Uhuru Peak. From the summit, views stretch across the glaciers of Kibo, the Western Breach, and the vast East African plains—a truly rewarding sight after the challenging ascent. After the summit, climbers descend carefully along the same route, returning to the gate with a sense of accomplishment and unforgettable memories.

The Mt Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route is ideal for first-time climbers, experienced trekkers, and anyone seeking a scenic, well-supported, and immersive Kilimanjaro adventure. It combines challenging trekking, dramatic landscapes, and a rewarding summit experience for an unforgettable African mountain journey.

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Moshi / Kilimanjaro Region
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Moshi / Kilimanjaro Region

Depart from Nairobi via the Nairobi–Moshi shuttle bus, or if arriving by air, land at Kilimanjaro International Airport where you will be met by your representative. You will be transferred to The Maridadi Hotel for overnight accommodation on a Bed & Breakfast (B&B) basis. Upon arrival, your head guide will conduct a briefing, check your trekking gear, and assist in arranging the hire of any additional equipment you may need for your climb.

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m/5,900ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,800ft)
Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m/5,900ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,800ft)

After breakfast at the hotel, your head guide will meet you for the transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate (approximately 45 minutes). After completing registration formalities, you will begin your climb along a winding trail through lush, dense forest. This zone receives the highest rainfall on the mountain, so be prepared for afternoon showers, which can make the trail slippery at times.

The ascent is steady, gradually easing as you approach Machame Camp, located on the edge of the forest and giant heather zones. Today’s hike is approximately 6–7 hours, offering beautiful scenery and the gradual transition from forest to moorland.

Day 3: Machame Camp (3,000 m / 9,800 ft) → Shira Camp (3,840 m / 12,600 ft) Elevation Gain: 840 m / 2,800 ft
Day 3: Machame Camp (3,000 m / 9,800 ft) → Shira Camp (3,840 m / 12,600 ft) Elevation Gain: 840 m / 2,800 ft

Today’s trek is slightly shorter but still offers stunning scenery. The day begins with a steep climb along a ridge leading to a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic Rock, where you can enjoy excellent panoramic views of Kibo, the summit cone of Kilimanjaro, and the jagged rim of the Shira Plateau.

Shira is the third of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic cones, shaped by ancient lava flows from Kibo. Its rim has been gradually eroded and blasted by volcanic activity and weather, giving it a dramatic appearance. Once you reach the plateau, the trail becomes gentler, allowing a steady ascent to Shira Camp. On a clear day, the views from the camp are truly spectacular.

Walking Time: Approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Shira Camp (3,840 m / 12,600 ft) → Barranco Camp (3,850 m / 12,650 ft) via Lava Tower (4,550 m / 14,900 ft)
Day 4: Shira Camp (3,840 m / 12,600 ft) → Barranco Camp (3,850 m / 12,650 ft) via Lava Tower (4,550 m / 14,900 ft)

Elevation Gain: 710 m / 2,300 ft
Elevation Loss: 700 m / 2,250 ft

Today’s trek takes you steadily up the high desert ridgelines toward Lava Tower, a dramatic 300-foot volcanic plug. The climb to the base of Lava Tower takes approximately 4 hours. If you have the time and energy, you can scramble to the top for fabulous panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

From Lava Tower, begin a steep descent into the Barranco Valley, passing giant flowering plants that resemble trees. This section provides excellent practice for your eventual summit descent, taking about 1–2 hours.

Although you will finish the day at nearly the same elevation as your start, this trek is crucial for acclimatization, helping your body adjust in preparation for summit day.

Barranco Camp is situated in a beautiful, sheltered valley at the base of the imposing Barranco Wall, providing a stunning setting to relax and rest.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,850m/12,600ft) to Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft)
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,850m/12,600ft) to Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft)

Elevation Gain:  750 metres / 2,500 feet

After breakfast, we leave Barranco Camp and begin our climb up the Barranco Wall.  This is an impressive scramble where you will be rewarded with fantastic views back towards camp.  The porters climbing the wall are also an impressive sight.  From the top, at 4,200m, you will follow an undulating path around the mountain side.  On a clear day there are spectacular views of Kibo to your left and Mount Meru to your right.  After descending into the Karranga Valley your climb takes you through Karranga Camp and steadily on to Barafu.  This is located on the ridge below the summit cone.  You have now completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. At Barafu we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this position.

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,300ft) then descending to Mweka Camp (3,110m/10,200ft)
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,300ft) then descending to Mweka Camp (3,110m/10,200ft)

Elevation Gain:  1,295 metres / 4,200 feet

Elevation Loss:  2,785 metres / 9,100 feet In the early hours of the morning you will begin your final ascent to the summit of Uhuru Peak.  This part of the climb takes approximately 6-8 hours. It can be very cold at night at these elevations, but it will be quite warm by the end of the hiking day and therefore you will want clothing for both extremes. Just when you think you’ve had enough of climbing in the dark the sun will rise and you will be rewarded with a rich red sky framing Mawenzi.  At Stella Point (5,750m) you join the crater rim.  From here, climb gently to Uhuru Peak which is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.  From the summit the descent will take you straight down to Mweka Hut, with lunch served on the way.  This part of the descent takes about 6 hours.  Later in the evening enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,110m/10,200ft) to Mweka Gate (1,830m/6,000ft)
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,110m/10,200ft) to Mweka Gate (1,830m/6,000ft)

Elevation Loss:  1,280 metres / 4,220 feet

Descend straight to the gate through lush forest (2-3 hours), looking for monkeys along the way.  Return to Moshi from Mweka Village. Our guide driver will drop you at the Park View Inn for the day at leisure. Lunch and dinner are on own arrangements. You are booked on bed and breakfast.
